Last week, Mrs. Bee reached out to the Weddingbee community by writing a post about the lack of diversity and representation on WB, and what steps can be taken to remedy what is lacking. Since I know that many of my beautiful readers followed me here from WB (and are fans of WB), I thought I would do whatever I can to help bring this issue to light.

Diversity, minority issues, and social justice are very important issues to me. I have always been involved with various communities in some way, shape, or form (although I will admit, since graduating from school and not having as much time my advocacy has been greatly reduced… which makes me quite sad). Anyway, my point is that WB does need help with celebrating and embracing diversity: different races, cultures, creeds, sexual orientations, etc. From what I gather, they want to help everyone to have an identity and to feel comfortable utilizing the resources on their website. Please comment on this post or contact me directly if you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns about Weddingbee and diversity. Also, if you have any suggestions for me (as a Bee who blogs), please let me know how you think I can help.

xoxo,

carly

Yes, I had noticed that brides on WB are either asian or white. For a while, it seemed like it was mostly asian, not I think it’s swinging back to mostly white.

As long as Mrs Bee is picking the best people, a part of that has to do with who’s applying to be a Bee. I have no idea how to attract a more diverse group to apply.

    (Sorry!)

    Hey Krista,
Thanks for the comment. Actually, your observations are exactly what kept coming up in the comments on Mrs. Bee’s post. Lots of white and Asian, not much of anything else. It’s funny, when I first started reading WB, it seems like racially there was a lot more diversity. Actually, in general, there was more diversity. It does tend to come in waves, like you said, depending on the applicants at the time. It’s tough, but I love that WB’s higher ups are so self-aware and trying to work on these issues.

    Thanks again for your input!!

I think just bringing up the issue on WB was a step in the right direction to attract bloggers from underrepresented groups. My guess is that your next applicant pool will be much more diverse, and once there are more bees who aren’t Asian or Caucasian, others will be encouraged to apply.

I think it’s an important issue, and I am glad it was acknowledged! I remember being so excited finding WB because of all of the Asian bloggers (these girls look like me! they too have to have a Chinese banquet and can’t get people to RSVP!) and it was such a comforting feeling.

It’s a good goal to have every bride feel that way when they read it. Sorry for the rant!

@Mo: Thanks for the input! I felt the same way as you when I found WB. I was very comforted by the Asian American community I found there. I hope that you are right about the new applicant pool. We’ll see!
