By now, all of my readers know about my unhealthy obsession with Anthropologie. Cruising their website is an expensive habit that I’m trying to kick. I have found some healthier (read: cheaper) and amazingly stylish online shops that have kept my interest. Allow me to introduce a few…

Pros: Unique tops, adorable dresses, moderate prices, good returns policy, item reviews, popular items are occasionally restocked.

Cons: Inconsistent quality, clothing not shown on an actual person, items rarely on sale.

You need to be really careful about Modcloth’s quality. Some pieces are great and well made. Others are cheap, but they still charge a lot for them. It is hard to make out which is which when you aren’t seeing it in person. This leads me to my second “con” which is they don’t show their items on a real body. Granted this “real body” is usually a 5’10”, rail thin model, but even so, you can eyeball proportions better when you see it on someone, anyone.

Recommendations: I have ordered four items from Modcloth: a dress, a blouse, and two sweaters (one of which is the red cardigan shown above). I have been very satisfied with all of my purchases. I attribute a good deal of my satisfaction to being really meticulous about what I order. Take the item reviews to heart. The ladies that shop on that site know their shit, and they tell it to you straight up.

Pros: Statement pieces that look like they are from Anthropologie without the price tag, cute shoe selection, excellent customer service, feature some of the same items as Modcloth but often at a lower price, seasonal sales.

Cons: No item reviews, clothing not always shown on a model/actual person, popular pieces often sold out.

Recommendations: Ruche is simply lovely. I have made two online purchases: a dress and a pair of boots. Both items were very affordable, and decent quality. I had a question about the boots before I purchased them. I got a personal email response to my inquiry plus a follow-up phone call just to be sure the order was correct. Also, as I mentioned above, if you see something on Modcloth you might want to cross-reference it on Ruche. If Ruche carries the item, there is a good chance it is selling for slightly less than Modcloth.

I first read about them when blog buddy elisharon hosted a Spotted Moth giveaway. I have yet to order anything, so I don’t feel comfortable writing a full review of their services. However, I have been very tempted by their stylish, affordable pieces and may have to place my first order very soon! I’ll let you know if/when I do.

Others…

I have a gift certificate to Shabby Apple that I can’t wait to use. I have been hawk eying their classic dresses for a long time, and I think I am ready to take the plunge.

A Cup of Jo featured EmersonMade’s new clothing line that is set to launch in August. I am in love with every single piece in the small collection, although I noticed it is quite pricey for my mini budget.

I have been so distracted by these online boutiques that I haven’t had the time nor the extra funding to shop at my usual chain stores.

Do you shop at any of these online boutiques? Got any good ones to add to the list?

Thanks for the rundown dear! I love Ruche and Modcloth but haven't ordered from them yet (returns are esp. sticky when I live so far away!)

I too love online browsing, though I seldom *commit* to online purchases because I am paranoid about things not fitting right, etc., especially as a short person with a long-ish torso.

I read a review of Shabby Apple on academichic, a style blog I follow, so I thought I'd share (some of the comments offer helpful insights about the site as well).

thanx carly, i now have purchased 2 belts from ruche. i am officially addicted. let us know how future purchases go. i'm always timid about purchasing real clothes online because some companys can be a real pain about returns and exchanges. but belts seem safe… and they're so freakin cute!

I love Spotted Moth! I came here looking for reviews of Ruche (knew about them for bridal but just discovered their full site) and found that you included one of my favorite local shops. I have been into their location several times and loved the selection; I had no idea that they were originally a full web shop. I recommend their stuff for it's quality (I have yet to buy anything but was impressed by the selection inside the shop).

Hi, I just ordered from Ruche. Came here to see others`experiences. Mine was not good. I asked for help on the sizes, sent them my measurements. The sizes they gave me and the actual size were very different. I`m in Canada so returns are not simple. When I asked for a solution they were indifferent, just told me to see their return policy. Also both dresses I ordered said fully lined in the description, neither was.
I won`t order from them again.
