I am taking a sociology class online right now, and it is changing the way I think about my life, society, and the world in a major way.
I was such a pompous ass. I started the class thinking I already knew most of what I needed to know. Piece of cake. Well, guess what? I got knocked on my ass. Never did getting knocked on my ass feel so good. I think it has something to do with the professor. I have taken online courses before and they’ve been snooze fests.
I have always believed that you should never stop learning, which makes my pompous ass behavior pretty hypocritical. Maybe it’s that I want to believe that my six figure student loan debt means something? Maybe it’s that I have to believe that so that I can fall asleep at night.
I have a couple of degrees to my name, but that really doesn’t say much about what I do and don’t know about the world. I have been out of school for more than two years. It’s so refreshing to spend a little time back in a learning environment. Man, I’ve missed this. Are you in school? If you’re not, do you miss it?
Learning something new and educating yourself are gifts.
Just some thoughts for the weekend. Enjoy yourselves.

I was in school 2008 and loved it. The intellectual stimulation is much needed sometimes.

Have you tried MIT Open course? They have some great, free courses there (I swear I'll donate some day when we have more $$ to fund this program).

As much as I enjoy learning… I'm so sick of school. I guess 23 years, straight, of it will do that to you though… I think I am really looking forward to learning in informal ways when i'm done with my formal education.

I'm in my second year of law school, and I have a very mixed attitude about school. Most of the time I treat it as a horrible chore, and focus more about surviving being cold called and the final than I really do about learning. Which is funny, because the times I forget that I'm in school and just interact with the material and think and love what I'm doing are the times when I really get something out of what I'm doing.
