Sew!
Both of my grandmothers could sew really well, and my aunt was a costume seamstress for Bob Mackie back in the day. So I’ve always, always been fascinated by it. Awhile back when we were cleaning out my grandma’s place, we found her old Singer sewing machine and all of her sewing supplies. I grew up wearing her handmade sweaters. My other grandma handmade a few of my Halloween costumes. Those were the days. And now that I think back on it, there is something so special, even magical about wearing something handmade by a loved one. Add it to my list of things to dream about…Is there a trade/skill/hobby that you hope to learn some day?

Giovanna – I would love to learn photography too! More so now that I've seen such great work on people's blogs.

I also really wish I could get back into creative writing, just for fun. That and drawing. I feel like I did so many creative things in high school under the guise of extra curricular activities, and then as an adult those things all fall by the wayside.

I wish I knew how to sew to, I have always wanted a sewing machine but since I was not reading to commit to spending money on something I may not use, I got a $40 little sewing machine from Target last weekend, it has 8 different stitches, baby steps! I hope to use it for making those party banners that seem to be all over the internet.

Sewing, photography, and painting just like my mom. I really want to be able to craft something of my own hands (something wearable or visually pleasing that is).

Sewing is actually what I wanted to learn! So I did… it's not that hard once you do it a bit. The big things are a) learning how your machine works and b) learning the different properties of different fabrics. The process has actually made me a more methodical person – you have to do all the steps, and you have to do them correctly and not half-assed. I went from making curtains(straight lines) to sewing stuffing elephants for babies! I'm going to put a teaser photo up in a little bit.

Ah, I know what you mean. I grew up wearing outfits my mother made. As you already know, she's a great seamstress. She gave me one of her machines, but I can barely sew a straight line. I'd like to learn…after I learn photography and practice illustrations! What are you going to do with the old Singer? Those machines are beautiful even to look at.

With the right teachers, sewing isn't as difficult as you might think. It's so much fun. You should check out Urban Craft Center in Santa Monica or Sew L.A. in Silverlake.

I'm with you on the sewing. And I'd love to learn to do letterpress and real printing.

@Perfume: We put it in storage, but I'd really love to get it in working order one day. It's awesome! And yes, your mom is a sewing genius 🙂
@Anne: I've seen a sewing center in Santa Monica. Maybe it's the Urban Craft Center? Definitely one day when I have time/money to spare! Sigh.
