I think I’ve been living in a dream world, because I just realized that the Los Angeles County tax hike is occurring PRIOR to our wedding. As of April 1, 2009, our new tax rate will be a ginormous 9.25% instead of its previous rate of 8.25%.
Great. And the hits just keep on coming. I guess I should be happy we aren’t having our wedding in Pico Rivera (an area of Los Angeles county) where their tax increase will bring them to 10.25%. Jeez.
If you are living in L.A. or anywhere in California, for that matter, and are wondering how you will be affected, check out this link. http://www.boe.ca.gov/news/pdf/l212b.pdf.

Eeek that is just not right! OUCH!

Yep, that sucks.
And you’re right – changing the name on yoru birth certificate is odd. I did say it’s rare in Ontario for a woman to change her name that way. She usually “assumes” her hubby’s name (which is also much cheaper – it’s free!)
But what if you were Carly and you wanted to become Carl? Or rather, you needed to become Carl, because biology should have made you a man, as is the case in gender changes. Would it not be appropriate to change your name (and eventually gender) on your birth certificate? That’s possible with “option #1”.
What if your father abandoned you as a baby, and as an infant your mother remarried, and your stepfather raised you. You want to change your last to match his? You can do that with “option #1”.
(In the case of someone I know – his mother reverted to her maiden name after his father abandoned them when he was an infant. As a teenager, he changed his name to match his mother’s last name. In those cases, the birth certificate is changed.)

I like that Japanese idea. I know the traditional “Scottish” way of doing things (and I mean 150+ years ago) was for the woman NOT to change her name.

i knew about this but for some reason It didnt process, I mean we will be affected as we are getting married in july! Wow this sucks, maybe we can pay off the big ticket items such as food before the increase kicks in? Gees, as if our budget wasnt suffering enough!
