Before I delve into the tale of our engagement, let me preface this post by stating that for purposes of Mr. Glitter’s ego and manliness, I will refer to him from here on out as Mr. G. If his friends knew I was calling him “Mr. Glitter”, he would never live it down.
Okay, now onto the engagement story. I have decided to tell it in two parts. Here is Part One. Back in May 2007 (yes, it’s been one long engagement), I was living in New York and finishing up graduate school. Mr. G was in L.A. slaving away at his accounting job. He had planned a weekend trip out to New York for a visit and to celebrate my birthday (which fell on a Sunday). I had spent the past few years complaining that we were never together on my birthday (because of our long distance arrangement) so I was super excited that he was flying in. Also, we had been talking about marriage for a long time, and we were at the point in our relationship where every single semi-major event, holiday or birthday meant a possibility of getting engaged. Ladies, you know what I’m talking about 🙂
Mr. G arrived on Friday and we had a whole slew of weekend activities ahead of us. The next day my friends had planned a birthday dinner for me. For some reason I had convinced myself that “the big question” would present itself that night. So naturally, during the day I was a total jitterbug, but was trying to play it cool. (A quick side note: I had been poking and prodding Mr. G about details of the ring, the engagement, etc. for months. I had become quite the nightmare engage-zilla!)
That evening, Mr. G handed me a ring box while we sat on the couch in my apartment. He didn’t get down on one knee. He didn’t whisper sweet words of love and devotion. Just, “Here you go!”
I jumped up, opened the box, and got ready for him to say those magic words, “Will you marry me?” Instead he asked, “Do you like the ring, hon?” A bit baffled, I responded, “Yes!” (You have to understand, when I get excited, details get rather blurry. I realize most women would have probably looked at the ring and said, “What the heck is this?” But I was clueless.) Immediately, Mr. G cracked up and repeated, “Do you like the ring? Look at the ring!” Had I been more astute, I would have realized that inside the velvet jewelry box was actually an unfortunate fake diamond ring with a dented band.
He then quickly and jokingly scolded me for being far too nosey about all this engagement stuff. (Mr. G frequently plays jokes on me, so this was not really out of character for him.) He proceeded to convince me that there would be no engagement until after I graduated from school. Though a bit disappointed, I figured I was acting a bit psycho. So we went to my birthday dinner and my nerves over whether we would get engaged or not subsided…or did they? To be continued.
Did your fiancé try to throw you off course with the engagement? Did it work or were you wise to their antics?

Hehe, Wade totally did that. I haven’t posted on our engagement. Maybe I should do that sometime!

My Fh told me he just wasn’t financially ready. all the while he was conspiring to find the money to buy me the stone I wanted. I couldn’t be happier with my non traditional but beautiful fancy light yellow cushion cut 🙂 And i was so thrown off b/c he said we’d have to wait at least 3 months before it was even feasible 🙂
