I am finally back with the second half of my dress fitting story. Sorry it has taken so long! The wedding is less than two weeks away, and I’m swamped with errands. Anyway, when I last left you (Part I), I had my first dress fitting with a very questionable tailor. As many of you noted, I should have stormed out after the tailor’s first, second, or third insult. But, in my defense, I was kind of stunned. The next part of my story is kind of embarrassing. I have struggled over whether to share it, but I figure, why not.

Immediately after my bad fitting I started questioning my dress. Was it too plain? Not formal enough? I even got online and began stalking other dresses. A couple of days later, I did the unthinkable. Late at night, with a guilty conscience, I put in a bid for a dress on eBay. I never thought my bid would actually be accepted, but of course, I won.

A minor bump in the road had quickly metamorphisized into a dilemma involving insecurity, indecision, and dress jitters. I didn’t have the time nor the money to be having this meltdown, and I still feel bad that I had it (hence, the feelings of embarrassment). But luckily, as soon as I put the second dress on, I felt like I was cheating on my first dress. I fell more in love with my original dress and my mind was set right pretty quickly. In retrospect, I think strangely I needed to go through the whole “second dress ordeal” in order to truly appreciate my dress. I immediately knew what I had to do. (By the way, the eBay dress was bought very cheaply and I hope to resell it. Fingers crossed!)

I marched back to the tailor’s shop and picked up my dress. I took it back to the store where it was purchased, and told the store owner about my situation. She immediately offered to do my alterations. I ended up having a fabulous dress fitting. It went the way fittings are supposed to go, and quite surprisingly, the alterations bill didn’t do as much damage as I thought it would. You might be asking, “Why didn’t I go to her in the first place?” I originally didn’t use her as my tailor, because I worried that I would be paying an arm and a leg for alterations at a dress shop. I guess, in a way, my desire to be frugal got me in this mess. Hey, you live and you learn!

Have you ever had dress jitters? Did you actually buy another dress like me? If so, did you go with your original gown or the new one?

I am so happy that you were able to work everything out! I am sure your original dress is just gorgeous! AND OMG two weeks, where has the time gone?

When I was getting married back in 2001, I picked my dress out of a magazine and went to try it on and tried on several others like it. I "liked" 'em, but I didn't LOVE 'em. So just to be sure, I asked my Maid of Honor to pick out 4 dresses that I would never wear. Her rules were these: Nothing with fake flowers or "rosettes" on it. Nothing with bows.

She ended up pulling out a long sleeve (I was looking at tank style) lace cut out gown.

That was the "the one". I stood in the mirror just stunned.

So-technically speaking, I didn't pick out my own wedding gown. My best friend did.

Of course, trying to sell the blasted thing now, 8 years later, is becoming quite the challenge!

Oh honey, I just did the SAME THING the other day. Freaked out about my dress and began stalking others online. Almost put in a bid on another dress, but instead dialed my best friend, who talked me down from the ledge.

I'm totally with you! The two week mark is making me go a little wacky!
