Now that the NFL season (and college football season) is in full swing, I’ve found that usual “couples” activities like shopping, browsing wedding crap and taking the dog to the park have somewhat dwindled. I don’t know about the rest of you, but my FI made the monumental decision to place himself in not one, not two, but three fantasy football leagues this year. (Psst…if you don’t know what fantasy football is, consider yourself very lucky). I’m not completely against the whole fantasy football thing. In all honesty, I have a fantasy team myself (which my brother mostly manages for me). But when it starts comprising most of your weekend time with your FI and he almost gets in a car accident trying to check his “fantasy stats” on his iPhone, you know it’s gonna be a long haul to get through the season.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, do not panic. Trying to pry your spouse away from the TV by blindsiding him with a florist consultation appointment or a trip to the store to buy crafting materials are not the best approaches to this precarious situation. During these tough times I’ve found that it’s important for a girl to do her own thing. I like to close the bedroom door and get comfy with my little doggy, Emma. I get online and scan wedding sites, write in my blog, finish reading my latest chick-lit book or catch up on back episodes of the L Word. These are my guilty girl pleasures and I’m happy to have time to myself to do whatever I want and need to do. I have a girlfriend in NY who bakes pies, cookies and bread while her man watches football. It’s important to counterbalance the testosterone, right? I’ve begun to look forward to and really savor my girl time. My FI and I have been together for so long, that I think somewhere along the way, there have been times when I lost sight of myself and neglected the things I liked to do on my own. Every couple needs activities and/or places they can go without their other half. Sometimes it’s what helps you from taking each others’ heads off.

Is your spouse missing in action during football season? What little things do you do for yourself during those lulls of time when your honey is glued to the television screen?

He likes to watch nascar, football, baseball and hockey. I really like the latter two, but the first two just kill me. So we have a deal that he doesn’t go crazy with nascar or football, and I won’t make him watch too much figure skating. It seems to work 🙂
