I have loved InStyle Magazine for years. I like to look at all the pretty pictures, especially the spreads of gorgeous celebrity homes. Dare to dream. I’ll admit though that I don’t really pay attention to the articles. But in June’s issue I read a portion of an interview they did with Salma Hayek. I loved what she said about “The Nine Things She Would Tell Her Younger Self.” This is a fabulous list – simple but a few smart words to live by.

Floss! Take care of your teeth.

Don’t worry too much or be discouraged by other people’s opinions.

Create some good habits, such as the way you eat and exercise.

Don’t waste time trying to impress the fools.

Avoid drama and don’t spend your time talking about it or giving in to it.

Count your blessings every day.

Enjoy nature.

Spend every second you can with your grandparents, and write down what they tell you. Film them if you can.

Keep a diary. I wish I had written down all the beautiful things men have told me…and they meant it.

What would you tell your younger self?

I love this. I would tell my younger (single) self – to just be yourself and don't try to hard to be something you are not. It's just easier that way. It was very hard being single and alone throughout most of my 20s. It was when I finally didn't care and was true to myself that I met my husband.

Oh, and I would say to go to the dentist. I'm so scared of the dentist and I wouldn't have the problems I had now if I would have just gone regularly. My current dentist is awesome, knows about my anxiety and walks me through every step so I stay calm.

Love this! There are so many things I wish I could tell myself at 16 or 21. I may have to think about that one and write my own list.

I would tell her to pay more attention in math class and less attention to the boy sitting behind her. Also that she was not fat by any stretch of the imagination, so eat something!

There is a great book someone sent me that I'd be glad to pass on to you. It's all about letters famous women would write to their younger selves.

I think I would tell my younger self that she deserves the best life has to offer. So look people in the eye! Stand up tall! You're worth so much more than you've settled for.

I would tell my younger self that her best days are in front of her, and to keep on keeping on. Sometimes when you're younger, you get lost "in the now." I am so pleased to be able to look back and remember how uncomfortable I was with myself back then and just how far I've come today!
