Knowing how much to tip is always a conundrum. I have a tendency to overtip. I’m horrible at figuring it all out. That’s why I’m happy to share with everyone some salon tipping pointers that I read about in Women’s Health Magazine.

Stylist: 15 – 20% of the service.

Colorist: 15 – 20% of the service.

Stylist’s Assistant: $10 – $20 (Is the stylist’s assistant the front desk person? Or do these so-called “assistants” actually cut hair?? The cheapie places I go to don’t require this.)

Shampooer: $3 – $5 (I always tip $3. I guess I should’ve tipped more that time I got a nice scalp massage.)

Blow-Out Person: $10

Coat-Check Girl: $1 (Once again, I’ve never come across a Salon Coat-Check person…but good to know.)

Now I’ve got to research the etiquette on how much to tip my wedding hair stylist. Anyone know off-hand how much to tip?

I have never had a separate colorist/stylist. It’s always the same person! And I certainly have never had a stylist’s assistant, shampooer, blow-out person, or coat-check girl.

I do know that if the stylist or colorist is an owner of the salon, a tip is not required. I am not sure why – maybe because the price of the service is their profit (instead of an hourly wage).
